GD2100 Layout Design

For this assignment, we picked an artist to use as a subject for a 12-page booklet about their life and work. I chose American Impressionist Mary Cassatt (1884-1926).

Booklet Design Process

BACKGROUND

I wanted to do something a bit different with my artist’s booklet.

My booklet is a child’s guide to the artist. My own illustrated character guides the reader through the booklet. I wrote the booklet text for a fourth-grade reading level.

I started with a contrasting pastel color palette, inspired by Cassatt’s paintings.

Rough sketches show how decorative lines and illustrated accents would compliment text and pictures.

Utilized consistent typographic grid and baseline grid throughout booklet

Headings

Carrotflower: A decorative font evokes children’s handwriting and rough brushstrokes.

Body

Andika: A sans-serif font that is recommended for young readers.

CHARACTER CONCEPTS

Final Design

A vector-illustrated character guides the reader through the text. The final character uses colors from the booklet color palette. A “pencil” line effect lends a hand-drawn look to the character, resembling a child’s drawing.
