Ellie Sage Doll

After creating a character design for Ellie Sage, I developed a cloth doll pattern using Adobe Illustrator. The doll panels were printed onto cotton fabric through Spoonflower.com. Then, I sewed and assembled the doll with a wire armature. I also designed chemistry-themed fabric and sewed outfits for the doll.

This doll has comparable measurements with popular vinyl 14.5-inch dolls.

Doll Height: 14 in, Shoulders: 4 in, Waist: 6 in

Doll Pattern Design

Digital Pattern

I designed a doll pattern in flat panels using Adobe Illustrator which allowed for printed simple underclothes, a face, and hairline.  Arms are attached separately.  Yarn hair is threaded through the top of the head, before stuffing.

The doll went through several prototypes with adjustments to the hands, face, and legs.

A final draft (before sending to Spoonflower) was printed with an inkjet printer on printable cotton fabric sheets.  I ran a test with an armature through the doll's torso, to correct the angle of the feet and allow the doll to stand on her own.

Armature

A wire armature was inserted into the doll's torso, before stuffing, to align the legs and provide structure.

3D-Printed Glasses

I designed a dimensioned sketch of the glasses in Adobe Illustrator, then imported the drawing into Fusion 360 and extruded a 3D model.

The model was printed with teal-colored PLA filament, then sanded and assembled.

UV resin was applied to strengthen the temple joints.

Outfits

Using my fabric designs, I sewed a simple wardrobe of bolero jacket, vest, and elastic skirt.
